UAE Minister of Foreign Trade Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi was bestowed an Honorary Doctorate of Laws (LLD) during the postgraduate graduation ceremony held  at the University of Exeter campus in Exeter, Devon, UK.   Professor Steve Smith, Vice President and CEO of Exeter University, handed the Honorary Doctorate of Laws Certificate to H.E. Sheikha Lubna in the presence of Exeter University Faculty, Education and Law professionals, and other distinguished personalities.

In her acceptance speech, Sheikha Lubna expressed her pleasure at receiving the degree . The minister also thanked the UAE's visionary leadership, starting from its former president, the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, for supporting and inspiring the nation's women to take on more productive roles in national development while valuing their heritage.

Sheikha Lubna explained that the success of UAE women in any field proves the advanced position they have reached at variouis fields under the wise leadership of  Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, as well as the support of Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak.
This support empowers the UAE women to achieve great success in the fields of education, development and government work.   The minister praised the great efforts undertaken by the UAE Government to develop economic legislation and trade laws to meet the requirements of local development and keep pace with global economic changes. She pointed out that law and formal sets of rules are essential to efficient international trade, especially in light of the protracted downturn.

"As the UAE's Minister of Foreign Trade, I help make sure that our commercial laws align with the needs and conditions of the global markets," said Sheikha Lubna.

Sheikha Lubna said that law is an integral part of her ministerial work and in inextricably linked to politics and economy.   The Minister noted the importance of the role of emerging economies such as the UAE, in helping shape the 'rules of the game', which in turn would ensure the agreements that result from our negotiations with regional and international trade partners serve the interests of all.   H.E. Sheikha Lubna referred that it is a real honour to be recognized for her contribution to trade law, empowerment of women and communities development by such a distinguished body as Exeter.

She also lauded Exeter's key role in promoting a better global understanding of the Middle East, particularly through the University's Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies (IAIS).   Many distinguished UAE personalities such as Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al-Qasimi, Member of the UAE Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and Dr Sulaiman Al-Jassim, Vice-President of Zayed University, and many leading and scientific figures have studied under Exeter's programs.

The University's IAIS hosts more than 30 Arab students, six of whom are from the UAE. These students are involved in fields ranging from history, politics, and economics, to gender studies, literature, and specialised Gulf studies.   Sheikha Lubna attended the UK university's Gulf alumni dinner in Sharjah last April 2009 in a strong show of support for Exeter's pursuit of stronger friendship and collaborative scholarship with the region and the broader Middle East.
