EU supports victims of terrorism in Algeria

Activities funded by the EU in the framework of a project seeking to support victims of terrorism and to raise awareness about children's and women's rights , are the focus of the latest Eurojar article published by the Lebanese paper AlHayat.

The feature says the project, entitled “Dar El-Hurrya” and implemented by the Algerian association “Djazairouna”, whose mission is to support victims of terrorism, is funded by the EU under the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (IDHR). It aims at creating a common space that would link all the activities implemented by the association. Since its creation in 1996, the association calls for the drawing up of a law that legitimates the status of “victim of terrorism”, with all pertaining moral and financial rights.

The project carries out other activities including organizing campaigns in schools and youth centres that seek to raise awareness on their rights, specifically according to the International Convention on the Rights of the Child. Campaigns were also launched to inform women across the country of their legal rights, and of the "Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW)". Within the framework of this programme, the association provides training sessions for supervisors to be in charge of supporting and accompanying Algerian women victims of terrorism through workshops and entertaining activities.

This is the second time “Djazairouna” receives EU funding. Three years ago, the EU had brought support to a project entitled “Memory”, a commemorative initiative for victims of terrorism in the 90s, including a campaign to raise awareness on the rights of victims, as well as on children’s rights within schools. “This project was a great success. Schools that were not in the list of beneficiaries called for participating in these campaigns.” Said Charifa Khaddar, president of the association and sister of two victims murdered in 1996. Hence, “the association was encouraged to implement another project in order to reach more children and more women, along with a particular attention to the victims of terrorism living in the province of Blida, 50 km from the Algerian capital."

14 projects are funded by the EU in Algeria within the framework of the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights, with a total budget of 5 million Euros.

Eurojar is one of 13 projects funded across the ENPI under EuropeAid’s €19 million Regional Information and Communication Programme, which seeks to increase awareness and understanding among the citizens of the area, about the EU, its policies and relations with their countries. The Eurojar budget amounts to €1.5 million and the project will last for one year. As well as Al-Hayat, it publishes articles highlighting EU cooperation in L’Orient Le Jour and Le Commerce du Levant, and broadcasts weekly reportages on LBCI and LBCSat. (ENPI Info Centre)
