The EU Delegation in Tunisia has launched six local authority and civil society projects that will be implemented under the EU’s regional and thematic programmes in the country – two under the CIUDAD regional programme and four under the thematic programme ‘Non-state actors and local authorities in development’. The six projects are worth a total of €1.75 million.

The projects chosen under CIUDAD (Coopération in Urban Development and Dialogue) are worth a total of €980,000. One, led by Cagliari province in Italy, aims to promote cultural and archaeological tourism linked to the Roman Empire in Tunisia, Italy, Romania and Russia, while the other aims to improve local authority capacities in sustainable management of waste in the Mediterranean, and is led by the Institut Bruxellois pour la Gestion de l'Environnement de la Région de Bruxelles Capitale.

The four projects under the ‘Non-state actors and local authorities in development programme’ will share €770,000 for rural development and sustainable development initiatives involving civil society.

CIUDAD aims to help local governments in the ENPI region (south and east) address urban development problems in a sustainable manner, promoting cooperation between local actors and their EU counterparts. The programme runs from 2009-2013 and is worth €14 million.

The thematic programme ‘Non-state actors and local authorities in development’ aims at encouraging non-state actors and local authorities, both from the EU and in developing countries, to get more involved in development issues.
