Morocco's initiative to grant substantial autonomy to its southern provinces, the Sahara, mirrors the Kingdom's resolute willingness to overcome obstacles to a final settlement of the regional dispute, Morocco's Minister in Charge with Relations with the parliament, Driss Lachgar told MAP news agency.

Speaking at the opening of the 4th "Mer et Désert" festival in the southern city of Dakhla, Lachgar Said that the autonomy initiative offered Algeria a descent way out of the impasse in which it has been stuck for years by opposing Morocco's efforts to perfect its territorial integrity.

This solution promises a pioneering experience in terms of local democracy, will reunite Saharan families  and enable the population held against their will in the camps of Tindouf (South-western Algeria) to return to their homeland Morocco, Lachgar added.

In this regard he called for uncovering the human rights violations endured by the forcibly detained population in Tindouf camps and denounced the use of human rights issues in maneuvers hatched by adversaries of Morocco’s territorial integrity.

By the same occasion, the Moroccan official showcased the development momentum witnessed in the southern provinces notably in terms of infrastructure and highlighted the climate of freedom enjoyed in the region.

Touching on the theme of the Festival, “Extended regionalization: a strategic choice, good governance and sustainable development”, Lachgar recalled the setting up by HM Morocco's King Mohammed VI of the Advisory Committee on Regionalization which is tasked with elaborating a Moroccan model of extended regionalization, in which the Southern provinces will feature prominently.  (MAP)
