The EU-funded project Qualed, which seeks to build and reinforce capacity and infrastructure in Lebanon in order to achieve better quality of goods, was the focus of the latest Eurojar article in the Lebanese daily L’ Orient LeJour.

The feature said that last January, the project organised a ceremony at which Lebanese President Michel Sleiman handed the Lebanese Excellence Award to seven companies. "This project aims to enable Lebanese companies to export more and thereby contribute to the economic and social development of the country and consequently create more jobs," says Franscisco Lopez-Menchero, in charge of economic development projects at the EU Delegation in Lebanon.

Qualeb, funded with over €17.1 million allocated mainly to support, promotion and training activities as well as equipment, was launched as a response to the results of study that revealed that low quality was to blame for the fall in Lebanese exports. It seeks to support Lebanon in creating and upgrading the infrastructure necessary to improve quality, first for Lebanese consumers and then to boost trade. "These infrastructures – mainly in the areas of metrology, standards, accreditation and control - are sometimes incomplete, sometimes outdated and sometimes even nonexistent," says Ali Berro, the project’s manager.

"One of the main axes on which we work is the upgrading of Lebanese products," says Lopez-Menchero, before explaining that, “Once Lebanese products enter the European market, they can access virtually all markets, as the European countries are the most demanding in terms of quality.”

Eurojar is one of 13 projects funded across the ENPI under EuropeAid’s €19 million Regional Information and Communication Programme, which seeks to increase awareness and understanding among the citizens of the area, about the EU, its policies and relations with their countries. The Eurojar budget amounts to €1.5 million and the project will last for one year. As well as L’Orient Le Jour, it publishes articles highlighting EU cooperation in Al-Hayat and Le Commerce du Levant, and broadcasts weekly reportages on LBCI and LBCSat.
