Libya, Syria to Establish Strategic Council to Boost Cooperation

Syria and Libya has agreed to establish a strategic cooperation council between the two countries in order to boost relations and achieve integration between the two countries and bolster Arab national security, according to the Syrian state news agency.

The agreement, which was signed by Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Naji Otri and General Secretary of the General People's Committee of Libya al-Baghdadi al-Mahmudi, stipulates for expanding cooperation in the field of energy, establishing various partnerships in different fields between Libyan and Syrian companies, encouraging cooperation among public and private sectors in both countries, boosting trade relations, and supporting cooperation in the field of banking.

The agreement also calls for cooperation in political and diplomatic fields, with increased consultation and cooperation regarding national and regional issues, in addition to cooperation in the fields of culture, education and science in order to encourage the exchange of students, academics and experts between the two countries.

The two sides also signed 17 agreements, memos of understanding and executive programs in the fields of transport, banking, finance, media, industry, economy, housing and mail at the conclusion of the 5th session of the Syrian-Libyan Joint Higher Committee meetings, with Premier Otri and General Secretary al-Mahmudi signing the minutes of the meetings.

Otri and Azawi Stress Necessity of Overcoming Obstacles Facing Investment, Trade and Economic Cooperation

Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed Naji Otri and Secretary of the General People's Congress of Libya Muhammad Azawi on Sunday discussed means of bolstering the standing Syrian-Libyan relations in the interest of the two countries.

The two sides stressed the necessity of overcoming obstacles that face investment, trade and economic cooperation and making use of the resources available to serve the comprehensive development process in Syria and Libya.

Otri indicated to the importance of cooperation and coordination between the two countries to support the joint Arab action and achieve solidarity.

For his part, Azawi hailed Syria's stances under the leadership of President Bashar al-Assad to defend Arab issues and face challenges, adding that Syria's achievements are the Arab Nation's.

Prime Minister Otri also met representatives of the Syrian community in Libya at the Syrian Embassy in Tripoli.

Otri was briefed on the situation and professional life of Syrian community in Libya and their concerns and conditions.

He briefed them on the economic progress and comprehensive development in Syria.

He pointed out to the considerable growth in the gross domestic product and the increase in the volume of Syrian exports in addition to developing investment environment and increasing the number of investment projects.

Prime Minister called upon the Syrian Community in Libya to participate in the construction process in Libya through their professional experience and establishing joint Syrian-Libyan companies which would contribute to the urban and developmental prosperity.

Otri pointed out to the important role of the Syrian community in enhancing and consolidating social and cultural ties between the two peoples. (agencies)
