Jordan warns Israel of settlements expansion consequences

King Abdullah II of Jordan has warned Israel of consequences resulting from building new settlement units.

Terming the step as "unilateral", King Abdullah said the move to build 1, 600 units aims at changing occupied Jerusalem's identity and threatens sanctity of its holy places.

Such actions thwart endeavours to achieve peace and further intensifies the situation in the area, the king said after meeting with President of the European Parliament (EP) Jerzy Buzek.

A statement by the Jordanian Royal Court said that the king underlined importance of the European role in intensifying efforts in order to overcome obstacles facing a solution for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
He also noted that such solution should be based on the two-state principle and the Arab peace initiative.

Appreciating EP's supportive role in this regard, King Abdullah hoped that such meetings contribute in fortifying peace efforts.

The king, during the meeting, was briefed with issues discussed in the sixth session for the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly, chiefly the Middle East peace efforts.

During the meeting with Buzek, Jordanian-European relations and means to develop them at all levels were discussed, the statement said.
