The first forum on an Arab initiative for building national capabilities to fight human trafficking kick-started in Doha, attracting some 500 participants from different world countries.

In a keynote speech during the two-day forum, Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development Chairwoman Sheikha Mouza Bint Nasser Al-Misnad said human trafficking is a world cross-border phenomenon that has perilous reflections on the security, social, economic and political levels.

In her speech, delivered on her behalf by Qatari Minister of Justice Hassan Al-Ghanim, she called for further promoting and developing multilateral cooperation for taking effective steps to combat this phenomenon.

She underlined the importance of the Arab initiative for building national capabilities for fighting human trafficking, adopted and nurtured by Qatar, as a framework for buttressing Arab efforts for eliminating this scourge.

Emphasizing that it is shared responsibility for fighting human trafficking, Sheikha Mouza said national capability-building process requires the adoption of objective policies, blueprints, programs and mechanisms for notching up the goals and purposes of the initiative and incarnating its lofty ends.

For his part, Qatari Foundation for Combating Human Trafficking Director Sheikh Khalid bin Jassim Al-Thani also addressed the gathering by sounding the alarm about the egregious ramifications of human trafficking.

But, he said Qatar is seeking to play an effective role in international efforts to fight human trafficking just out of its belief in the principles of its national constitution.

Over the recent years, Qatar has exerted great efforts on the legislative, institutional and promotional level to fight human trafficking crimes just as part of its efforts to protect human rights, he added.

The forum on an Arab initiative for building national capabilities to fight human trafficking aims to find the best scientific and practical ways to provide high-quality services to victims of human trafficking and to create dialogue among scientists, thinkers and specialists with a view to boosting public and official awareness of this serious phenomenon.(KUNA)
