Oman & Pittsburg seeking to attract private investments

A seminar on partnership and Cooperation between the Sultanate of Oman and the US city of Pittsburg was opened at Al Bustan Palace Hotel today under the auspices of Mohammed bin al Zubair, H.M. the Sultan's Adviser for Economic Planning Affairs.

The seminar is seeking to attract local and foreign private investments, raise the private sector's investment share to enhance the success of the private-sector's based investment strategy as part of Oman's Economic future Vision 'Oman 2020'. It also seeks to achieve economic stability and sustainable development and diversed source of income to realize economic diversity and the overall strategic objectives.

At the outset of the seminar, Lyotha bint Sultan al Mughariyah, Head of the Department of the Secretary General's Office at the Foreign Ministry gave a speech welcoming attendees. She reiterated the importance of economic and investment cooperation between the Sultanate and the US city of Pittsburg that has huge potentials for investment in various spheres including steel manufacturing.

She added that the seminar aims to shed light on the areas of success in Pittsburg and how to utilize them to meet the Sultanate's requirements, emphasizing the importance of economic diversity in the Sultanate. The seminar is also aimed at achieving further understanding, contact and strengthening friendship ties and trust between the two sides, she furthered.

S. Curts, head of Pittsburg Centre, the Middle East gave a speech underlining the attention accorded by the City of Pittsburg to technology, using clean energy and Oman's keenness to utilize the renewable energy including the solar power. She has also touched on the possibility of cooperation in the areas of health care, culture and energy.

Addressing the seminar, Dr. Salim bin Nasser al Ismaili, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Omani Centre for Investment Promotion and Exports Development (OCIPED) stressed on the

deep-rooted ties binding the Sultanate and the US which dates back to 1790 when the first US ship docked in Muscat and when Sheikh Ahmed bin al Nouman was appointed as Oman's first envoy to the US in 1840.

Four major themes have been debated on the 'Fossil Energy, studies and researches, science of Robotics and Advanced Manufacturing' health care and health institutions' management, the alternative energy... electricity and water and the alternative energy industries.

The seminar follows the Sultanate's positive participation at the 2nd Business Conference organized by Pittsburg's Centre, the Middle East in the US titled 'Building Green City, Pittsburg and the Middle East, Sustainable Energy and Green Technologies' in October 2009. The Sultanate's delegation to the Conference was led by Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamoud al Busaidi, Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry and Head of Steering Committee of the Peaceful Nuclear Technology. The Chairman of the Water and Electricity General Authority, representatives of the Foreign Ministry, the National Economy Ministry, the Commerce and Industry Ministry, the Research Council 'TRC', Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), the Electricity Regulatory Authority and the Industrial Innovation Centre at the Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (PEIE) had also participated in the conference.

It's worth to mention that the US city of Pittsburg in the State of Pennsylvania is a lead in oil, coal and gas industries, computer engineering and IT, health care, advanced industry, medical technologies, robotics, green inventions, sustainable energy, environmental research and green houses.

It was ranked top by 'the Economist' in 2009 as one of the US most good places for living. It was also ranked among the best ten major future cities, and selected by President Obama to host the G20 Summit in September 2009 being a model for renewable city that pursues new and green technologies, which attains the Sultanate's interest. The two-day seminar is being organized by the Omani Foreign Ministry. (ONA)
