The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai government announced it would open seven stations of Dubai Metro on April 30 and three others on May 15.

Speaking to reporters here, RTA's Board Chairman and CEO Motar Al-Tayer said the consortium developing Dubai Metro project would finalize the construction works of all the 18 stations of the Red Line on April 25.

"The seven stations to be opened late this month are the Emirates, the airport's Terminal I, Al-Karama, Burj Dubai (Dubai tower), Dubai Internet City, Marina, and Ibn Batouta," Al-Tayer disclosed.

"The three stations due to open on May 15 are the GG Co., the Trade Center, and Al-Qous with the remaining eight stations of the Red Line, which serves key areas in the emirate, being opened in the coming months," the RTA chief pointed out.

"The stations slated for early opening were decided according to a number of criterions including the population density in the respective areas of the stations, the commercial activities and public buildings in the vicinity, and the closeness to other means of transport," he noted.

The RTA has conducted a field survey of the neighborhoods were the Metro crosses as a prelude to launching new public bus stations close to the Metro stations.

Up to 28 buses were added to link the metro stations to the existing road network in the neighborhoods within a span of time between trip ranging between 13 and 20 minutes, Al-Tayer went on to say.

Since its maiden trip on September 9, 2009, Dubai Metro has carried some 13.68 million passengers with the daily average amounting to 80,000 passengers.

The figure is expected to top 35 million when the projects operates at full capacity late this year, he added.
