Media Creativity Forum is Opened at Sultan Qaboos University

Hamed bin Mohammed al Rashdi, Oman Information Minister affirmed that the government of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said continues its efforts in training and rehabilitating the Omani media cadres in implementation of the Royal Order of the country's Monarch.

In a statement to reporters after presiding at the opening of the Media Creativity Forum at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), al Rashdi said that His Majesty the Sultan's government has availed all programmes and potentialities to facilitate sustainable training.

He pointed out that the trainers report indicates that the outcome of the training courses being implemented by the Information Ministry for a number of media men and journalists, especially the internal training programme have been good. ‘There will be an external training programme. The report of the second course is still under processing, he added.

The Information Minister affirmed in his statement that the education process is still going on and that the education process is not limited to certain place or certain period. ‘The success of the course depends on the seriousness of the trainee. The media men taking part at the course should ask themselves the extent of benefiting from such courses and what can be added to these courses in the future.

The Information Minister praised the efforts undertaken by the College of Arts and Social Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) in terms of preparing the students. He described such efforts as encouraging for talents and a reflection of the effort undertaken by the University to prepare the next generation of media men, whom we are looking forward to see them with their media colleagues in the radio, TV, press and other publication means.

He added that he was pleased to see the production and contributions of such talents as they evoke admiration and give us broad hope that the shortage in terms of quality and efficiencies will be rifted soon.

Al Rashdi also affirmed that the comprehensive development and Renaissance witnessed by the Sultanate under the wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said is going on and that such development is characterized by sustainability. He added that the media outputs will undoubtedly have their place in the media field.

Al Rashdi added that he believes that the media means in the Sultanate is witnessing a constant growth in terms of the press establishments, as well as, public and private  radio and TV therefore the outputs will surely have their place in these institutions.

The Media Creativity Forum aims at crystallizing the University's aims related to maintaining communications between the University and the work market to identity market needs, improve the professional skills and knowledge of the students, highlight the student's potentialities in media field and create a positive image about media work at SQU.

The Forum also aims at providing the students at the Media Department in SQU with theoretical and practical training, highlighting their role in media work and integrate at the University's students' minds the concept of creativity as value associated with work.

The opening ceremony included a documentary about the Media Department and the Forum. It also included a speech for the chairman of the preparatory committee for the forum, Dr. Abdul Munem al Hasani. It also included honoring two media personalities who played a prominent role in the Omani media.

While addressing the gathering Dr. Al Hasani pointed out that the Media Forum is a pure effort by student from conception till implementation. He added that the role of the teaching staff at the Media Department was limited to guidance of the students.' The Forum aims at building media personalities who can bear the responsibility'.

After that Hamed bin Mohammed al Rashdi, Information Minister opened the exhibition held on the sidelines of the Forum. The exhibition displays samples of the works done by Media Department's students.

This year, the Forum hosts two prominent Arab media personalities namely Muntaha al Rumhi of Al Arabiya Channel and Khadijah bin Qanah from Al Jazeera Channel to speak on the role of Arab woman in media. Media students from AGCC countries, Jordan and Egypt also take part at the student seminar on ‘media training from students' perspective'.

On the sidelines of the Forum there will be a competition called ‘a young announcer'. The students will compete with each others to showcase their skills in presenting the radio and TV programme. The third issue of "Ibhar" magazine published by the Media Department and the first issue of the ‘Fourth Authority' bulletin will also be released.

It is worth mentioning that the two-day forum is held under the theme "Ibhar. (ONA)
