The ancient city of Bosrea (southern Syria), located 40 kilometers east of Daraa, saw 229,853 visitors in 2009, 100,671 of which were foreigners, 11,650 were Arabs and the rest Syrians.

These numbers mark a considerable growth in various fields which calls for extra work to meet the requirements of tourism in the city, Chairman of Bosra City Council Wael al-Mufleh said.

In this regard, the Daraa Department of Tourism is proposing a project from a three-star hotel at the Bosra train station, in addition to projects for tourist investment in antique houses in the city and renovating them, training staff, and developing archaeological sites in the city.

The growing number of tourists calls for tourist and commercial activities that didn't exist in the city before, in addition to the traditional handicrafts that have become popular with foreign tourists.

Director of Daraa Department of Archaeology Hussein Mashhadawi pointed out that cultural and religious tourism represent the cornerstone of Syrian tourism in general, noting that many tourists pay special attention to the details of these sites.

In turn, Director of the Daraa Department of Tourism Mohammad Salim Qutaifan said that there are efforts to increase tourism investments in Daraa, and that a number of tourist projects will be proposed in upcoming investment conferences.

The city of Bosra was listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1982. It contains a wealth of archaeological sites and landmarks, each with its own unique story and oral history that pique the curiosity of visitors. (SANA)
