Deep-rooted relations - Speaker of the British House of Lords visits Oman

Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed al Isa'ee, Chairman of Majlis A'Shura received Baroness Helene Valerie Hayman, Speaker of the British House of Lords and her accompanying delegation currently visiting the Sultanate.

During the meeting, Sheikh al Isa'ee underlined the good bilateral relations binding the two friendly countries and the importance of promoting them in various fields. He also touched on the aspects of mutual cooperation between the two sides particularly in parliamentary level.

He also spoke about the Shura in the Sultanate, the advance stages it has reached, the relation of the Majlis with the government and the Majlis practice of legislative and monitoring prerogatives.  He also pointed out that the participation in elections in the Sultanate is availed to all Omanis. The Omani woman has the right for voting and to be a candidate in the general elections of Majlis A'shura. She has been a member during Majlis A'shura's previous terms. He wished her all success in the forthcoming elections.

Majlis A'shura Chairman also spoke on the Majlis A'shura membership at the Arab, Islamic and international parliamentary organizations, in addition to, the principles and stands adopted by the Majlis through its participations in deliberations of these organizations.

On her turn, Baroness Helene Valerie Hayman, Speaker of the British House of Lords expressed her delight for visiting the Sultanate and the progress and prosperity she saw. She also expressed her delight for visiting Majlis A'Shura and meeting its officials, got acquainted with the achievements accomplished in the Shura process in the Sultanate and the Majlis's distinguished status among the Arab and international councils.

A number of issues of common concern at the regional and international levels were also discussed during the meeting.

On the other hand, Dr. Yahya bin Mahfoudh al Manthri, Chairman of the State Council received Baroness Helene Valerie Hayman, Speaker of the British House of Lords and her accompanying delegation.

During the meeting, Dr. al Manthri hailed the good deep-rooted relations binding the two friendly countries, stressed the importance of such meetings to enhance bilateral ties, joint cooperation and issues of common concern for both sides. He hoped that the visit would achieve envisaged goals and promote various areas of cooperation between the two friendly countries, particularly those related to parliamentary fields. Dr. al Manthri briefed members of the visiting delegation on the Shura march in the Sultanate, its progress and prerogatives of the State Council and its role.

On her turn, Speaker of the British House of Lords and her accompanying delegation expressed their thanks for the invitation extended to them to visit the Sultanate and their pride over the visit, for the good opportunity it availed them to meet a number of officials in the Sultanate to discuss a number of issues of common concern for both countries.  They also commended the progress being witnessed by the Sultanate and efforts exerted in all spheres under the wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

The meeting was attended by a number of honourable members of the State Council, the Secretary General of the State Council, the British ambassador to the Sultanate and a number of officials at the State Council. (ONA)
