Egypt: Electricity sector invests $ 20 bln to reach 58 thousand megawatts

Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Energy Hassan Younis stressed that energy security comes on top of the electricity sector priorities; pointing out that the insurance of the future generations needs will be achieved through technological systems that supports establishing new systems and rehabilitate and develop the existing systems.

The Minister pointed out that that the electricity sector has plans until 2027 to add new power generation capacity to reach about 58 thousand megawatts and the implementation of transmission and distribution networks with investments amounting to around 110 billion (USD 20 billion).

He added the sector had finished the new law on electricity to keep pace with global trends and it include mechanisms to encourage private investment to work in the areas of production and distribution of conventional electric power and the more of integration with regional energy markets.

The Minister confirmed that a new precedent in the implementation of this strategy was launched.

The first global call for investors to experience a previous request for the establishment of the first power station in 1500 megawatts thermal card system construction, operation and ownership .. As well as advocacy for the establishment of the first project of producing electricity from wind power a 250-megawatt, stressing the commitment of the Egyptian Company for the transfer of electricity to purchase energy produced from these plants for 25 years and transfer to electricity distribution networks and on to the load centers in the governorates in accordance with the rates agreed with a government guarantee for the investor and provide the ground system the right to use to take advantage of the facilities to reduce emissions for renewable energy.

The call came a result of the successful experience of putting up the first international tender for investors to establish the first wind farm, which provide them with 34 companies, ten qualified firms to evaluate bids.

The Minister concluded his remarks a continuation of the policy of the sector in ensuring the energy security of Egypt .. Egypt is working on the integration of the energy market overall dimensions three dimension of the Mediterranean and Arab, African and Egypt plays a leading role in these dimensions of the three and adjusted on the support of the electric linkage is with Saudi Arabia to be a step to link the electric with the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council to complete the loop linking the electric pavement between the countries of the Maghreb, the Levant .. As well as with Africa through the Nile Basin Initiative and to benefit from the enormous resources in river and lakes, tropical Anja and the countries of East Africa.
