Dubai Press Club today announced Nobelist Dr. Ahmed Zewail, sole recipient of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry (1999), will deliver the opening speech at the ninth edition of the Arab Media Forum that is set to gather more than 800 media personalities and witness over 70 speakers debating and discussing key industry topics.

Dr. Zewail will also participate in a panel discussion. Titled “Building the Future – The role of science and media”. The session will be moderated by Ahmed Moslemany, Presenter of ’First Edition‘ programme on Dream TV.

Outlining his personal vision to build scientific societies for channelling the Arab youth’s energy and aspirations, Dr. Zewail will examine the importance of localising technologies to catalyse a comprehensive development. He will also invite panelists’ viewpoints on ways to enhance the media’s role in the Arab countries’ efforts to develop region-wide education and scientific research.

As an eminent scientist, Dr. Zewail believes in the possibility of a comprehensive renaissance in the Arab world, and calls to build a ‘scientific society’ as the base for progress. The Egyptian-American scientist offers a clear ‘road map’ to accomplish the objective.

Dr. Zewail was the sole recipient of the 1999 Nobel Prize for his pioneering developments in femtoscience, which is the study of chemical reactions across femtoseconds - a millionth of a billionth of a second. More recently, he and his team have developed 4D electron microscopy for the direct visualization of matter’s behaviour, from atoms to biological cells, in the four dimensions of space and time.

Dubai Press Club (DPC) has announced the 9th edition of the Arab Media Forum will be themed ‘Shifting Medias-cape: Inspiring Content… Expanding Reach’, to highlight the instrumental role of enriching content and its implications on the fast-evolving sector.

To be held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, from 12-13 May at The Atlantis-Palm Dubai, the event is expected to witness the participation of more than 800 eminent Arab and international media personalities.

Maryam Bin Fahad, Executive Director, Dubai Press Club, said: “The Organizing Committee and the Working Group of Arab Media Forum 2010 have selected the theme ‘‘Shifting Mediascape: Inspiring Content… Expanding Reach’’ for the ninth edition to profoundly reflect the agenda for the individual sessions and workshops.

“A total of 70 eminent journalists and the most influential decision-makers from the visual, print, audio and online media segments will drive intense discussions at these sessions on the status of the media in different regions and explore the way forward for the industry.”

The agenda for Arab Media Forum 2010 covers a wide spectrum of topics ranging from specific segments and individual countries to the role of digital content and its impact on the industry. Some dedicated sessions include a focus on the continuously evolving nature of citizen journalism as well as its new and different areas of impact, a special session on the Kuwaiti media scene, and a discussion on the Egyptian satellite media.

The forum will also discuss the media scene in emerging Asian countries, and assess the way Arab media addresses the Western public opinion. In addition, there will be a dedicated session on the reasons behind the wide disparity between the media in the Maghreb and Mashreq countries.

A dedicated session at AMF 2010 will debate the move to establish a commission for Arab media aiming at regulating the sector, in addition to promoting transparency and keeping content clean from provocation or racism. A special discussion will highlight the explosion of entertainment industry in the Arab world, while the opportunities and challenges to journalism in the digital era will be the focus area for another session.

A group of experts will also discuss the impact of fast-evolving technology on the media and subsequent changes it may bring about. There will also be a session on the current and future situation of the local Arabic content in Arab media, a fact that has been considered a great challenge for both media veterans and end users.

The influence of sports and its economy, and the local presence in sports journalism in general and television in particular will be the focus area of another session. Another session will focus on the etiquette of dialogue and the virtue of listening to analyse the challenges during live television debates.

The two-day Arab Media Forum 2010 will conclude with a gala ceremony that will honour the winners of Ninth Arab Journalism Awards (AJA).

Themed ‘Arab Media: Weathering a Period of Change and Crisis’, the 8th edition of Arab Media Forum heard over 60 regional speakers driving individual discussions with more than 2,000 participants including editors-in chief, representatives from the TV and radio segments, opinion editors and officials from various media domains.
