Qatar’s three-hall pavilion at Shanghai Expo opened by HE Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah, the Deputy Premier and Minister of Energy and Industry, reports Qatar State Agency.

A huge screen at the pavilion will give glimpses into Qatar’s future vision and display facets of its tradition, heritage and  handicrafts. Al-Attiyah and his accompanying delegation arrived in Shanghai yesterday morning.

Qatar is one of the first countries, after China and Japan, which has completed designing and installing its pavilion as per the timetable set by the organising committee. This is the second time Qatar is participating in a World Expo: the first time was in the Expo held in Japan in 2005.

Qatar’s pavilion, costing about QR10mn, showcases details of the various major projects being implemented in the state. A workshop to teach Chinese children how to write Arabic and teach them the basics of Arabic calligraphy will be among the daily activities planned at the exhibition. A programme will be held to celebrate the State of Qatar’s Day at the Expo.

The concrete walls of the Qatar Pavilion feature art patterns reminiscent of the Barzan Tower, a landmark building in the country. The tower in Doha once served as an observatory of the lunar phases as well as a signal tower for approaching ships and pearl divers. It represents the glorious memory of Qataris.

The pavilion has prepared some fun activities and exhibits for visitors, including interesting tests, Bedouin tents, crafts and interactive videos, which will display how Qatar has taken advantage of green technologies to envisage a sustainable city in the future.

Fun Exhibitions

The gallery inside the pavilion will be hold a range of exhibitions, including collections from the Museum of Islamic Art, Fabergé eggs, stamps issued in Qatar as well as children's works.

Underwater Scenery

The pavilion also displays the underwater scenery of "pearl and oil," the two rich natural resources of the country.

It is worth mentioning that Expo 2010 Shanghai China will also be a grand international gathering. On the one hand, it shall endeavour to attract about 200 nations and international organisations to take part in the exhibition as well as 70 million visitors from home and abroad, ensuring the widest possible participation in the history of the World Expositions. On the other hand, it will put Expo 2010 Shanghai China in a global perspective and do the` best to encourage the participation and gain the understanding and support of various countries and peoples, in order to turn Expo 2010 Shanghai China into a happy reunion of people from all over the world.

In addition, Expo 2010 Shanghai China will offer a wonderful opportunity for cross-culture dialogues. Before the conclusion of the Exposition, a "Shanghai Declaration" will be issued. This declaration, hopefully a milestone in the history of the World Expositions, will epitomise the insights to be offered by the participants and embody people's ideas for future cooperation and development and extensive common aspirations, thereby leaving a rich spiritual legacy of urban development to people throughout the world.
