Morocco, Spain - two countries and a common landscape

What do the historic centres of Tetuan and Málaga have in common? And the Cimadevilla area of Gijón with the Kasbah of the Udayas in Rabat? What similarities are there between the work that is being done on the bank of the Manzanares River in Madrid and that being done on the L'Oued Bouregreg Valley between Rabat and Salé?

The Spanish Ministry of Housing and the Western Mediterranean Cultural Association (MEDOCC) answer these questions in ‘Yusur-Puentes’, an exhibition under the Spanish Presidency of the EU, showcasing photographs and videos in which the architectural and urban similarities between Morocco and Spain, as well as their similar landscapes, are on display. The exhibition is currently showing in Madrid, before travelling to Málaga and Rabat.

According to the Spanish EU Presidency, the exhibition is structured into six contrasting pairs of scenes, arranged into the following sections: coastal, inland, city, neighbourhood, large-scale urban and communication. Each pair is made up of one Spanish scene and another Moroccan one, which, when viewed opposite each other, reveal to the visitor the aesthetic and cultural affinities which unite them.

In this way, the exhibition introduces the visitor to the landscape and architecture of two neighbouring countries and emphasises important architectural projects which have substantially modified their landscapes. At the same time, the show contributes to the effort to restore the prominence of the Mediterranean basin and continue the cultural dialogue with Morocco.

The ‘Yusur-Puentes’ exhibition will be on at the Arquería de Nuevos Ministerios exhibition space in Madrid until 13 June, before travelling to Málaga, courtesy of the Unicaja Foundation, and Rabat, were it will go on display at the National Library.
