Egypt will open three mega irrigation projects in Qanater within the coming few weeks, an official announced.

Egypt Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Mohamed Nasreddin Allam said: “The Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will open within the coming few weeks three mega irrigation projects in Qanater at investments of about 120 million EGP”

Allam was speaking to reporters during a visit to the projects on yesterday.

Allam said the projects include the new Menoufi and Tawfiqi canals barrage and lock.

The Egyptian official said that the projects aim at boosting efficiency in the use of water in Lower Egyptian governorates in an area covering some 2 million feddans.

On other hand, Egypt will host the first Euro-Med Agricultural Ministerial Conference next month with 48 agriculture ministers from the European Union and southern and eastern Mediterranean countries attending.

The conference, which will be held under the auspices of President Hosni Mubarak and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, will seek outlining a strategy for sustainable agricultural development, said Dr Saad Nassar, an advisor to the Egyptian minister of agriculture and land reclamation.

The participants will take up agricultural development and food security in the Mediterranean region, he said, adding that another preparatory one by experts and technicians at the Egyptian Foreign Ministry Headquarters will precede the meeting.

Several topics will be floated at the Euro-Med conference, including, rural development in the southern and eastern Mediterranean region, research and guidance, technology transfer especially in the domain of irrigation and exchanging new brands of highly-productive crops and cattle species.
