Syria Ministry of Economy and Trade is working to determine the necessary plan for beginning negotiations to join the World Trade Organization (WTO) in light of the Organization accepting Syria's application to join it, the state news agency reported.

During a meeting of the committee in charge of preparing for Syria joining the WTO on Monday, Minister of Economy and Trade Lamia Assi stressed the importance of Syria's admission, underlining her ministry's plan to promote the event.

She pointed out to the role the mass media can play in shedding light on this step and explaining it to the public opinion, adding that the WTO Directorate at the Ministry will organize a seminar in cooperation with the UN and other bodies in order to clarify the importance of Syria joining the TWO.

According to AFP, World Trade Organisation states agreed to open negotiations on its long-standing bid.

The WTO's ruling General Council during a meeting in Geneva agreed to set up a working group that would examine the country's accession, the trade body said in a statement.

"This is a historic occasion for the WTO and Syria," Syrian ambassador Faysal Hamoui said in a statement to the Council.

"In taking this decision, the organisation has responded, as it always has done, to promote international cooperation for trade and development," he added.

Syria's request was sponsored by Egypt on behalf of the Arab group of countries among the WTO's 153 members.

Egypt pointed out that Syria had been one of the 23 founding members of the WTO's free trade predecessor body in 1947, the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs (GATT).
