The European Union and Tunisia have agreed to set up an ad hoc group to work on a roadmap to achieve an advanced status between the EU and Tunisia.

Speaking at a press conference after the eighth EU-Tunisia Association Council meeting in Brussels, EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle said perspectives for strengthening EU-Tunisia relations were “excellent”.

Describing Tunisia as “an important and reliable partner” and “an economic pioneer among the European Union Neighbours”, the Commissioner told journalists: “We agreed to set up an ad hoc group to work on a roadmap which would lead us to the advanced status. That advanced status will be focussing towards more intense political dialogue, legislative approximation, a deep and comprehensive free trade agreement.”

Although a timetable was not set, Commissioner Füle stated his desire for the group to start work in June so results can be seen by the end of the year.

The political dialogue between the two sides also focused on human rights and political pluralism and economic and regional issues such as the Union for the Mediterranean, the EU-Africa partnership and the situation in the Middle East.

The EU was represented at the Association Council by Commissioner Füle and Spanish Secretary of State Diego Lopez Garrido, whose country currently holds the EU Presidency. Tunisian Foreign Minister Kamel Morjane represented his country.
