Egyptian Archaeologists: Remains of church, Nilometer discovered at rams road

Archaeological mission of the Supreme Council of Antiquities in Egypt discovered the remains of a church and a Nilometer during excavations at the Rams Road between the Luxor and Karnak temples , Minster of Culture Farouk Hosni said.

The discovery dated back to the fifth century AD.

At the same context, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Zahi Hawwas said on May 11th 2010 that the remains of the church were found in the second sector of the Rams Road which is divided into five sectors.

The church was built during the fifth century AD with stone blocks dating back to the Ptolemaic era with religious inscriptions on it.

The mission has also discovered a Nilometer seven meters in diameter and assortment of pottery.

In the same time Dr. Sabri Abdel Aziz the head of the Egyptian antiquities council said that, the mission also found in the fourth sector by rams on the scale of the Nile circular shape constructed of sandstone, the view of spiral staircase with a diameter of seven meters. It was found inside a pottery vessel and it returns to the end of the era from the modern state / about 1567-1085 BC .

Adding they discovered several of the basis of Rams statues in the latter sector of the road to the temples of Karnak and these blocks contain inscriptions and scenes. And it stresses that the King Amenhotep III, who built this section of the road, as he ruled of the country between 1417 and 1379 BC approximately.

However the Supreme Council of Antiquities said in their statement that they are currently reviving the rams, which have length about 2700 meters and width 70 meters after the abuse it was on both sides of the statues of the Sphinx body of a lion and head of a ram symbol of the god Amun-Re to protect the temple . And the ancient Egyptian called this name on the road Watt Nethrwhich it means the God's way.
