Jordan (Amman) The management of cultural heritage sites and artefacts in the Mediterranean region needs considerable improvement, according to the EU-funded programme Euromed Heritage 4, which is organizing a thematic workshop on the management of heritage sites and artefacts.

An announcement said the workshop, to take place from 17 to 19 May in Petra, Jordan, would familiarise participants with the fundamentals of a Heritage Management Plan (HMP). This would include the integration of tourism aspects, guaranteeing the sustainable preservation of heritage and sites and representing at the same time an opportunity for local level economic and social development. The objective is to introduce participants to state-of-the-art pratice in HMP and stimulate them into developing aspects of HMP to be translated into viable business plans within their project activities.

The site at Petra will be used as a major case study for HMP, together with other examples in the management of urban historic centres, monuments and archaeological sites, museums, itineraries and routes, etc., from around the Mediterranean.

The workshop will produce a list of recommendations for approaches more tailored to needs that would serve towards the elaboration of a “reference document”.

Euromed Heritage IV is an EU-funded project, with €17 million over four years, which contributes to the exchange of experiences on cultural heritage, creates networks and promotes cooperation. It focuses on the appropriation by the local populations of their cultural heritage and favours access to education and knowledge of cultural heritage. It supports a framework for the exchange of experiences, channels for the dissemination of best practices and new perspectives aimed at the development of an institutional cultural environment.
