Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Italy 's Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi have expressed keenness to further cooperation ties Prisedent Mr Mohamed Hosni Mubarakbetween the two countries in the various domains.

Mubarak and Berlusconi also showed interest in ongoing consultations in the various regional and international issues.

This came during a joint press conference held during president Mubarak's current two-day visit to Italy.

President Mubarak will hold with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi the third Egypt-Italy summit within the framework of a strategic partnership, which was launched in Rome in 2008.

Ambassador Suleiman Awwad, the Presidential Spokesman said President Mubarak will have consultations in Italy on ways of developing cooperation between the two countries on the fields of trade, investment, tourism, training the Egyptian labour, and enhancing small and medium size industries.

The two leaders will discuss the establishment of the Egyptian Italian University on technical education. The summit will witness the signing of 24 agreements and memos of understanding covering different domains, Awwad said.

Ambassador Awwad said talks will deal with partnership relations between Egypt and the EU with main emphasis on reactivating the peace process.

On his part, Minister of Trade and Industry Rachid Mohamed Rachid said the coming state will witness a surge in Egyptian-Italian economic cooperation, with Italy being Egypt's number one European trade partner.

Italy is also among Egypt's biggest trade partners with the volume of trade exchange reaching 5.153 billion euros in 2008, he said on Sunday 16/5/2010.

Egypt and Italy also have a special political relationship, he added.

Egyptian-Italian spheres of cooperation are diverse and comprehensive and cover the various sectors of industry, tourism, energy and banking services, Rachid said.

Italy participated in the establishment of 49 joint projects with Egypt in 2009 despite the world financial crunch, he said. Italy is also a strategic partner of Egypt at the political and economic levels, he said.

A program is now being implemented with the Ministry of Trade to transfer Italy's modern technology to Egypt's industries of clothing, textiles, furniture and marble, through a number of specialized technology centres built together with Italy, he said.

The program is part of the existing bilateral partnership to strengthen and widen cooperation in the various domains, Rachid said.

The Egyptian-Italian summit talks come within the existing framework of strategic cooperation and to achieve greater cooperation in the various spheres, attract more Italian investments to Egypt and enhance Italian contribution to the modernization of the Egyptian industry, Rachid said.

On the sidelines of President Mubarak's visit to Italy, the first high speed Italian ferry for commodities will be launched, he said. It will sail from Venice to Alexandria in less than three days, he said.

Storage areas for Egyptian commodities will be set up in Venice to be transported to European markets by land in record time, he said. (SIS)
