Boosting strategic partnership - Egypt, Italy sign 24 cooperation agreements

Italy and Egypt have signed 24 cooperation agreements and memoranda of understanding on the sidelines of talks between Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and his visiting Egyptian counterpart Hosni Mubarak.

Egypt Petroleum Minister Sameh Fahmi said that Egypt and Italy signed two memoranda of understanding on oil and gas exploration.

He added that this will contribute to boosting the strategic partnership between the two countries.

Egypt Foreign Ministers Ahmed Abul-Gheit and his Italian counterpart Franco Frattini met on the fringe of the joint strategic summit, the third, between their countries.

Talks between Ahmed Abul-Gheit and his Italian counterpart took up regional and international developments, atop of which efforts to revive Middle East peace.

Minister of International Cooperation Faiza Abu Naga and the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs Franco Frattini signed a joint declaration on an economic development project in the western Northern Coast of Egypt.

Both Frattini and Abul-Naga were also signatories to a memorandum of understanding on a new bilateral cooperation program.

Egyptian Agriculture Minister Amin Abaza signed a memorandum of understanding with the Italian Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies.

Rashid Mohamed Rashid, the Egyptian Minister of Trade and Industry, signed a joint declaration with the Italian Ministry of Economic Development to boost cooperation in the fields of industry and trade.

One memorandum of understanding was signed between the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Italy's Enel (Ente Nazionale per l'Energia eLettrica) company.

Egypt Petroleum Minister asserted his ministry's keenness to realize self-sufficiency of petrochemical products, oil and gas industry.

Fahmi also pointed out to a growing role for Egypt in the Mediterranean markets in light of its new reserves and growing prospects that are expected to shore up its expanding role in the international and regional gas industry and place it among the world's major energy producers.

The minister made the remarks on Wednesday 19/5/2010 during the inauguration of the exhibition of the 6th Mediterranean offshore conference.

As many as 215 international companies are attending the event.

The minister urged the international companies to maintain cooperation with the Egyptian companies to carry out mega projects oversees.
