Syria, Romania Activating Economic Cooperation & Trade Exchange

Syria Prime Minister Mohammad Naji Otri discussed with Romanian Minister of Economy, Trade and Business Environment Adriean Videanu the bilateral cooperation and historic friendship relations and means to broaden their prospects, reported the Syrian State News Agency.

The two sides underlined the importance of activating the role of businessmen and investors, increasing the economic and trade cooperation and facilitating the exchange of national products to make Syria and Romania a gate for each others products into the neighboring and foreign markets.

Minister Videanu underlined that his country is interested in boosting up and giving priority to its relations with Syria to upgrade them in all domains.

The meeting was attended by Syrian Minister of Finance Mohammad al-Hussein, Syria's Ambassador in Bucharest Walid Osman, the Romanian Ambassador in Damascus and the delegation accompanying Minister Videanu.

Means of Developing Commercial Relations & Syrian-Romanian Businessmen Council's Role Discussed

Later, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Abdullah al-Dardari discussed with Minister Videanu the Syrian-Romanian commercial and economic relations, calling for developing them in the interest of both countries and friendly peoples.

Talks during the meeting dealt with means of enhancing the role of Syrian-Romanian Businessmen Council to establish economic partnerships, increase the volume of trade exchange between the two countries and the flow of goods to their respective markets.

Syrian-Romanian Committee Discusses Mechanisms of Activating Economic Cooperation

Meanwhile, the Syrian-Romanian committee started its meetings Thursday with discussing subjects of common interest in different economic sectors and mechanisms of activating the economic cooperation.

Finance Minister Mohammad al-Husein, chairing the Syrian side, highlighted these meeting after a stop for more than 8 years, praising its role in reviewing the situation of the economic cooperation between Syria and Romania as well as work on upgrading it.

Minister al-Husein stressed the necessity of benefiting from the available capacities in both countries to activate and increase the bilateral trade exchange which only recorded USD 150 millions the last year.

He also underlined the role of the Syrian-Romanian Chamber of Commerce which was established in 2009, businessmen and private sector in enhancing the economic relations, particularly in light of the existence of five thousand Syrian companies working in Romania and a Syrian community of ten thousand people, in addition to four thousand Romanians in Syria.

For his part, Romanian Minister Videanu, chairing the Romanian side, said his government gives priority to the Syrian markets as traditional ones based on friendship relations which provide many opportunities for the two countries.

Videanu pointed to the possibility of benefiting from the Syrian market to pass through it to the markets of the region and to Syria's benefiting from the Romanian market to enter the European market.

The Romanian Minister also explained the importance of activating the agreements signed between Syria and Romania and removing the obstacles that face them, calling for signing new agreements and putting them into force as soon as possible.

Videanu stressed Romania's support to Syria to join World Trade Organization (WTO), saying "Romania will exert huge efforts till the signing of EU-Syria Association Agreement.

The joint technical committee discussed on Wednesday means of enriching the common cooperation, and prepared a number of documents which provide the legal framework to increase cooperation in different sectors, particularly commerce, investment and energy.

Badr discusses with Videanu cooperation in Transportation

Syrian Minister of Transport Yarub Sleiman Badr discussed on Thursday with Romanian Minister of Economy, Trade and Business Environment Adriean Videanu appropriate mechanism to enhance cooperation in the transportation sector.

Minister Badr said that facilitating the move of trucks between the two countries by canceling fees imposed on them would make the cost of transporting goods cheaper and will increase the volume of trade exchange between the two countries.

Badr added that the work on establishing a fast sea line between ports in Latakia and Costa Rica is continuing.

For his part, Minister Videanu expressed his country's desire and preparedness to implement the proposals submitted by the Syrian side.

In the context of Maritime transport cooperation, General Manager of Tartous port Zaki Naguib said in an interview with SANA that a passenger and cargo ship sailed today from the Italian port of Venice inaugurating the first direct sea line between ports of Tartous and Venice.

Al-Juni reviews with Videanu potential industrial opportunities in Syria

Syrian Minister of Industry Fuad Issa al-Juni reviewed on Thursday with Romanian Minister of Economy, Trade and Business Environment Adriean Videanu cooperation and the available industrial opportunities in Syria.

Minister al-Juni expressed his Ministry's desire to establish joint industrial investments between public and private sectors in the two countries and prompting industrial bilateral cooperation.

For his part, Minister Videanu stressed his country's interest in establishing a real partnership with Syria in light of the good political relations between Romania and Syria. (SANA)
