Oman (Muscat) - Under the auspices of Mohammed bin al Zubair, H.M the Sultan's Advisor for Economic Planning Affairs, Oman Society of Engineers, in collaboration with the Gulf Engineering Union organized at Intercontinental Hotel an engineering seminar under the theme ‘ rules for practicing the profession and the system for classifying engineers' and the celebration to distribute the engineering professional certificates.

Mohammed bin al Zubair affirmed the important role played by the Omani Engineers' Society and the benefit the participants may get from this seminar. He pointed out that they will receive support and cooperation from all respective authorities.

Eng. Sultan bin Said al Shithani , Chairman of Oman Society of Engineers delivered a speech where he said that the seminar marks the beginning of a new stage of professional engineering work as it lay the basis for an active role played by the vocational societies in general and engineering one in particular to serve the nation and the society The seminar stresses the importance of the joint Gulf vocational work and the cooperation among the Gulf nationals. It also calls for professional excellence and constant development, as well as, appraising the knowledge, experiences and efficiencies. The seminar regularizes the vocational roles and responsibilities and places the responsibilities on those who can bear them. It also highlight the practice of the different aspects of engineering profession especially the engineering assessment and classification.

He added ‘we are not taking the first steps in the lengthy road we must go if we want to achieve success, development and progress. This is the way of efficiency and achievements either on individual level or nation's level.

He also pointed out that Oman Society of Engineers will soon start a program for vocational training for youth engineers to complement the engineering training program. This vocational guidance program is based on senior engineers provide guidance to youth engineers on the means to acquire the best knowledge and practices.

For his part, Dr. Khalil Ibrahim al Hosani, Secretary General of the Gulf Engineering Union, said that owing to the rapid growth of a number of the engineering projects and businesses in the AGCC countries and the labour market's need for a  talented  engineers, the Union, in agreement with heads and members of the Gulf Engineering authorities has devised the AGCC engineers training and classification system in order to promote the engineering practice in the Gulf Region. The system will serve both the public and private sectors, he added.

The system aims to assess the academic qualifications and expertise of all employees working in the engineering profession. It also seeks to apply the best engineering practices to protect the society against the wrong engineering practices and to keep abreast of the latest development in the areas of specialty, he added.

'The training and classification system has been registered in the Gulf Engineering Union. The training and classification of excellent Omani engineers by the Omani Engineering Association calls for the pride of the Omanis and Gulf Engineers,' he pointed out.

The chief guest then handed over the engineering professional certificates to a number of Omani engineers in a number of specialties including the electronic, civil, electric, computer, architectural, gauging and controlling, agricultural, communications, mechanical, chemical, petroleum, minerals and industrial engineering.

Dr. Khamis bin Humaid al Busaidi, presented a working paper on the training and classification system at the Oman Society of Engineers. (ONA)
