EU: Three initiatives promote sustainable tourism in the Mediterranean

While considering the opportunity of creating a Mediterranean label of tourism, to position the Mediterranean as a competitive destination on the market through a “Med” label, the EU-funded Invest in Med programme supports concrete initiatives in the tourism sector in the Mediterranean.

A press release said three initiatives, implemented under the Invest in Med programme, focus on Tourism:

- Best-Med (Union Camere), which aims to support the sensitising of tourist-hotel operators to the advantages of sustainable tourism and to encourage the integration of an eco-sustainable dimension in their development strategies.

- ETINET (Chamber of Commerce of Malaga), which seeks to promote investment opportunities, identify best practices and stimulate the creation of Mediterranean networks in two sectors with potentially high added value: cultural tourism and nautical tourism.

- MovieMed (CCI Marseilles-Provence), which aims to raise awareness among local actors (film commissions, local governments, etc) of the multiplying economic advantages of film production, particularly in the sector of tourism, and to train them on how to benefit from these productions to increase the visibility of their local area.

After a market study of the products, technologies and eco-durable services available in the tourism sector, soon to be published on the programme’s website, 210 BtoB meetings were organised in the framework of Invest in Med between European companies and hotel operators from Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia. These meetings generated more than 100 business partnerships, some of which are already operational.

Ministers of tourism from the Union for the Mediterranean countries gathered in Barcelona on 19 and 20 May 2010 to discuss how to boost the competitiveness of the tourism industry in the region and ensure its sustainability.

Invest in Med is a Euro-Mediterranean Network of organisations, funded by the EU with a budget of €9 million, committed to investment promotion and trade facilitation, strengthening SME collaboration and exchange of best practices.  It aims to increase the abilities and efficiency of Mediterranean Investment Promotion Agencies, thus enabling more foreign direct investment in the Mediterranean Partner Countries. This multi-country platform supports the economic development of the Mediterranean and reinforces cooperation between European and Mediterranean IPAs.
