Egypt - Origins of Arabic-Islamic heritage in focus at manuscripts conference

The sources and origins of Arabic-Muslim civilisation will be the focus of the seventh annual conference of the Centre for Manuscripts at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, to be held in the framework of the EU-funded MANUMED project, from 25 to 27 May 2010 in Alexandria, Egypt.

An announcement said the conference, held under the theme “Heritage Continuity. Origins and Preliminaries of Arabic/Islamic Heritage”, seeks to examine the nature and the vitality in heritage continuity from one civilisation to another and from one culture to another. Among the tools to be discussed will be comparisons, analysis of sources, examination of translations made in the first centuries of Islam. These will serve as the entry point to the discussions and debates around the themes of the conference, including philosophy and the natural sciences, general knowledge and history, languages, ideas and religious concepts, arts and literature.

“The aim of this conference is to underline mutual influences between the different civilisations and examine the beginnings of what nowadays is known as the “Arabic-Muslim heritage”, a heritage which benefited from the culture of previous civilisations and enriched humanity with its own contributions,” says Stéphane Ipert, MANUMED project coordinator.

Participants in the conference include researchers and experts from several European countries and Mediterranean partner countries of the European Union.

The Manumed project aims to contribute to the preservation of the diversity of written heritage, and its corollary, language, as an intangible heritage. It gives priority to training in the field of cultural heritage with particular focus on involving young people in the development of contemporary solutions, on paying more attention to national and minority languages in the region, and on supporting craftsmen who work in the domain of manuscripts and are still practicing ancestral techniques.

EuroMed Heritage IV is a €17 million EU-funded programme which contributes to the exchange of experiences on cultural heritage, creates networks and promotes cooperation with the Mediterranean Partner Countries. It focuses on the appropriation by the local populations of their cultural heritage and favours access to education and knowledge of cultural heritage. It supports a framework for the exchange of experiences, channels for the dissemination of best practices and new perspectives aimed at the development of an institutional cultural environment.
