Egypt & Pakistan to launch Joint Business Council

Egypt Minister of Trade and Industry Rachid Mohamed Rachid said the first meeting of the Egyptian-Pakistani business council will be held immediately after the formation of the council within a month.

The first meeting will be held in Pakistan, Rachid said Sunday 23\5\2010 at a meeting in Cairo with Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi.

The council is to group 15 members on each side representing ten important sectors; namely energy, telecommunications, textiles, agriculture, tourism, IT, construction, pharmaceuticals, banking and finance, Rachid added.

Egypt and Pakistan have maintained strong relations since the independence of Pakistan in 1947.

-In 1951, the two countries signed a friendship agreement, signifying the strong ties between the two countries.

-Pakistan supported the Egyptian 1952 Revolution, defending the right of the Egyptian people for independence.

-In 1965, late president Gamal Abdul Nasser interfered to halt the Indian-Pakistani war.

-Pakistan played host to some Egyptian warships during the 1973 War.

Egypt and Pakistan have also been working to promote their economic ties.

-In 2001, the two countries signed a memo of understanding to boost their agricultural cooperation.

-In Dec. 1995, Egypt and Pakistan signed two agreements on dual taxation prevention and naval cooperation.

-In May 1989, the two countries signed a trade agreement to seek the Egyptian expertise in the field of agricultural productivity.

Egypt and Pakistan have also maintained strong cultural relations, represented in:

-Exchanging visits between Egyptian and Pakistani experts and specialists.
