Representatives from over 130 countries have convened in Hyderabad, India for the World Telecommunication Development Conference 2010 (WTDC). ictQATAR’s Secretary General Dr. Hessa Al-Jaber is leading Qatar’s delegation to the conference with the goal of sharing Qatar’s experiences in developing a vibrant ICT sector, helping shape the global ICT agenda and learning from other leading international experts.

The conference, which opened yesterday and runs through June 4, 2010, is hosted by the International Telecommunication Union. Held every four years, WTDC 2010 is building on the progress of the 2006 conference held in Doha. At the conclusion of the conference, delegates will ratify the Hyderabad Action Plan, a shared vision and action plan for the next four years for the global development of ICT.

Al-Jaber delivered remarks on Qatar’s progress in ICT development as part of the opening High Level Segment, where all delegation heads shared their work, including policy developments, initiatives and future goals.

“The admirable and ambitious action plan that resulted from the 2006 WTDC meeting in Doha served as a valuable platform for Qatar as we developed our nation ICT strategy. Qatar has focused efforts in four broad areas: creating a legal and institutional environment; enabling an attractive market environment; building an advanced ICT infrastructure and; establishing a good skills and human resource-based environment,” said Al-Jaber.

Al-Jaber went on to share important initiatives underway and stressed the need to build digital literacy in the region. “As Qatar continues to roll-out broadband we are studying the best approach for high speed NGN coverage. We are developing a pragmatic strategy that can utilize the best infrastructure possible and is likely to result in a mix of fixed and wireless technologies, to ensure national coverage. Also, we have just signed a deal to launch a new satellite that will be used to grow our broadband and communications capacity,”

“We need to make ICT easily accessible and provide training resources where needed. We need to teach 21st century skills to adults and children alike so they can use, process, create and share information in the digital world. ictQATAR is leading many programs to address these very needs,” said Al-Jaber.
