About 42 percent of the Kuwaiti population are feeling the brunt of a hike in cholesterol rates, a study conducted by the Kuwaiti Ministry of Health in cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed.

The study was prepared at the initiative of the Eastern Mediterranean Approach to Non-Communicable Disease (EMAN), that was issued by the WHO regional bureau along with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Plan on Educating on Chronic and Non-communicable Diseases, said Health Assistant Undersecretary for Hygiene Affairs Dr. Yousef Al-Nisif to KUNA.

Al-Nisif added that this study revealed that there is 24 percent of population suffering from hypertension, while the percentage of diabetic patients reached 16.7 percent, with those who are afflicted with obesity hitting 40 percent.

As for the smoking rates in Kuwait, they hit 20.6 percent, with the lethargy and inactivity percentage soaring to 57.2 percent, he said.

Al-Nisif pointed out that the Ministry of Health follows the recommendations made by the WHO on countering the problems resulting from chronic and non-communicable diseases, noting that it made a big stride on education programs on this respect.

Further, he spoke highly of the GCC Plan on Educating on Chronic and Non-Communicable Diseases along with applying the world health survey, adopting the global strategy for health, food and movement and upgrading the executive plan for fighting the spread of diabetes.

The WHO has set six important goals on this respect including prioritizing the non-communicable diseases on the developmental agenda at the world and regional levels along with promoting the national policies and plans in the field of preventing and fighting these diseases.

These goals also include reducing the after-effects of tobacco and alcoholic beverages addiction, the unhealthy diets, the lethargy and encouraging the scientific research that aim at finding solutions to such problems along with monitoring the rates of the spread of non-communicable diseases in order to evaluate the measures taken for fighting them.
