Dubai Children's City is the first educational city in the UAE devoted to children between the ages of two and fifteen years, where they can investigate, explore, play, discover, and learn about the world in which we live.

It was inaugurated by Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance Hamdan bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, on March 5, 2002.

Head of the Dubai Children's City, Nabeela bint Rashed Al-Mansouri, told KUNA that the Municipality of Dubai planned to establish this city in 1992 as an educational city dedicated for children.

The city is specially designed for children to interact and discover together, as families and school groups, she noted.

It contains several exhibits and programs on applied sciences, nature, space exploration, human body, local and international culture, as well as a kid's corner and a planetarium, Al-Mansouri said.

The Children's City presents daily educational workshops throughout the year at the different galleries and entertainment programs at the Children's City Theatre for school students, children and families, she said.

Al-Mansouri added that that the city is offering people with special needs a proper environment to learn and entertain, and it allocates a special day to commemorate them.

The city celebrates international and Arab festivals as well, where it presents theatrical shows and workshops, like the 26th GCC Traffic Week held under the motto of 'Beware of Other People's Mistakes', she said.

The city also has a special day called 'Talents Day' which focuses on children's potentials and talents and encourages them to practice their creative skills.

Dubai Children's City is exchanging expertise with international children's museums, including Kuwait's Scientific Center, she added.

The city obtained membership in international bodies like the UNESCO International Council of Museums, besides memberships in American children museums, Al-Mansouri affirmed.

It also signed a twinning memorandum with Melbourne Museum, and is working to sign one with the Children's Museum of Indianapolis in the US, which is the oldest children museum in the world, and the fourth worldwide in size and quality, Al-Mansouri stated.

Dubai Children's City won the ISO certificate of 9001-2000, and the Hamdan bin Rashid Al-Maktoum prize dedicated for educational institutionas for the year 2010.

The mascot of the city, 'Murshed', is an Arabian leopard found in the UAE, and is under risk of extinction. It was chosen to remind the children of this animal.(KUNA)
