Morocco: Exports up 9.7 %, tourists rise 11% & energy imports increase 51.8%

Rabat - Morocco's goods exports reached by the end of April 2010 some 40,45 billion dirhams, that is a 9.7 % rise compared to the same period in 2009, thanks to the Office Chérifien des Phosphates (OCP) good performance.

The exports of phosphates and by-products increased by 60.7 % to stand at about 8,72 bln dirhams compared to 5,43 mln dirhams in 2009, the Exchange Rate Monitoring Office (Office des changes) said.

The OCP sales, which account for 21 % of the Kingdom's goods exports, jumped by 40.6% compared to the same period last year.

Phosphoric acid exports increased by 78.6 % to reach 3,81 bln dirhams, the Rabat-based Office Des Changes said.    

Natural and chemical fertilizers sales rose to 2,73 bln dirhams. 

2.39 million tourists visited Morocco in Jan-April 2010

The number of tourists who visited Morocco over January-April 2010 reached some 2.39 million, that is a 11% rise compared to the same period last year, Morocco's Tourism Observatory said.

The French continue to top the visitors' list with 890,000 (+5%), followed by the Spanish 511,000 (+13%), the British 128,000 (+19%), the Belgians 123,000 (+13%), the Germans 119,000 (+9%), the Dutch 115,000 (+17%) and the Italians 97,000 (+18%), statistics published by the tourism Observatory said.

The same trend was witnessed in overnight stays which rose 7% to stand at 5.43 million, the same source said.

Morocco's Oil Bill Reaches over $ 900 mln up to April
Morocco's oil bill stood at some 8,18 billion dirhams (about $ 912 million ) up to April 2010, compared to 3.93 billion dirhams a year before, Morocco's Exchange Rate Monitoring Office said.

During the same period, Morocco imported 1.75 million tonnes of crude oil against 1.43 million tonnes a year earlier, the Rabat-based Office said.

According to the same source, Saudi Arabia tops the list of Morocco's suppliers of crude oil with some 3.66 billion dirhams followed by Iraq (2.58 billion dirhams) and Russia (1.94 billion dirhams).

Imports of all energy products rose by 51.8% to stand at some 21.2 billion dirhams, said the Office.
