Egypt and South Africa are leading talks to combine the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to form an economic entity to 31 African countries, said Egyptian Trade and Industry Minister Rasheed Mohamed Rasheed.

While participating in a cultural salon hosted by the Saudi Ambassador here Hisham Mohieddin Nazer on Wednesday night, Rasheed said Egypt is supporting 50% of freight value of exports to Africa as shipment is a huge problem for African countries which do not have sea ports such as Ethiopia and Uganda.

In addition to the Arab free trade zone agreement, Egypt has also signed free trade zone agreements with the European Union and the COMESA and the Qualified Industrial Zones (QIZ) agreement with the US, Rasheed said.

He added he applied for Egypt's accession to the Gulf Cooperation Council Customs Union. Egypt is about to sign a free trade agreement with South America's four-nation trading bloc Mercosur, he added.

On the other hand, Egypt Minister of Electricity and Energy Hassan Younis received Thursday 03/06/2010 his Zimbabwean, Tanzanian, Congolese and Guinean counterparts.

The meeting took up ways to boost cooperation among these countries in the field of electricity, Younis said. These states want to benefit from the Egyptian experience in providing more than 99% of Egypt's population with electricity, he added.

Younis voiced Egypt's readiness to boost cooperation with these African states in the different domains. Egypt is training a number of experts from those countries in specialized training centers, he added.(SIS)
