Egypt, Switzerland expanding cooperation in investment, renewable energy and technology

Egypt and Switzerland agreed on June 7, 2010, to deepen and expand cooperation in the fields of investment, intellectual property rights, classification, new and renewable energy and technology transfer.

The two sides also stressed the importance of increasing joint investments in the various domains as part of a joint plan ending late 2011.

This came during talks held by Minister of Trade and Industry Rasheed Mohamed Rasheed and Swiss State Secretary for Economic Affairs Jean-Daniel Gerber, currently visiting Egypt.

Minister Rasheed pointed out that the European Free Trade Agreement (EFTA) between Egypt and the group, which was put into effect in 2007, led to an increase in the volume of trade between Egypt and the group members, which include Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. He said the volume of inter-trade amounted to $ 871 million in 2009 against 425 million in 2005.

The Minister pointed out that the value of Swiss investments in Egypt reached $ 685 million in 354 projects in the sectors of investment, industry, constructions, services, finance and tourism.

He said that Egypt looks forward to deepening cooperation and increasing exports to the EFTA member states. (SIS)
