Syria: sugar production expected to reach about 160,000 tons

Syria (Homs) - The General Organization for Sugar in Homs has estimated Syria's production of white sugar during the current year to reach about 160,000 tons, up more than 85 tons of white sugar compared to past year.

Director of the Organization Ahmad Mousa al-Mutair said Thursday in a statement to SANA that the estimated Syrian production of sugar-beet for the current year is 1,400,000 tons which will be produced within three months. This quantity is expected to produce 250,000 tons of wet dregs used as feed and about 70,000 tons molasses used in manufacturing yeast.

He added that the sugar companies in various provinces began to receive the sugar beet from farmers to be manufactured. The Ministry of Agriculture raised prices of the sugar beet to encourage farmers to continue planting this strategic crop.

Syria's production of sugar beet last year amounted to 715,000 tons, yielding 72,000 tons of white sugar. (SANA)
