UAE, UK strengthening defence & economic cooperation

British Prime Minister David Cameron completed his visit to the UAE on Saturday after meeting UAE President and Ruler of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, members of the UAE Cabinet and senior UAE officials.

Sheikh Mohammed and Cameron discussed cooperation and friendly relations and ways to further promote them in all areas to the best interest of the two countries.

Sheikh Mohammed stressed the UAE's interest in expanding relations with Britain. The meeting also discussed regional and international developments and focused on peace efforts. The meeting underscored the efforts and the need for making progress to put an end to the sufferings of the Palestinians and to reach just peace that would lead to regional security and stability.

Cameron underscored the current UAE visit, his first since assuming office as Britain's Prime Minister, in terms of exchanging views on all matters that would invigorate cooperation between the two countries as well as enhance the prospects for regional peace that would lead to regional security and stability.

Following his meetings, Mr Cameron said: "The deep friendship between the UK and the UAE is based on a unique, shared history and common interests.   But even more important than these is our common future.  We are committed to strengthening our cooperation on defence and security, as long-standing friends with shared vital interests.  Also, with so many important business relationships and investments in both our countries, we both want to build and develop our economic ties."

Global Arab Network has received a statement form Downing Street spokesperson saying: “The Prime Minister was delighted to meet UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Abu Dhabi Crown Sheikh Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and members of the UAE Cabinet during his visit.

“The Prime Minister and his hosts reaffirmed the importance of the UK-UAE relationship.  They discussed a wide range of issues, including Afghanistan - where British and UAE forces are working closely together; Iran and further steps to strengthen the bilateral relationship.”

Also at the meeting were H.H Sheikh Hazza' bin Zayed Al Nahyan, National Security Advisor, H.H Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Anwar Mohammed Anwar Gergash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Khaldoun Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Executive Affairs Authority, Staff Lt. General Hamad Mohammed Thani Al Rumaithi, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Dominic Jermey, UK Ambassador to the UAE, senior officials and members of the delegation accompanying the visiting British Prime Minister.

Cameron's visit followed a visit by UK Secretary of State for Defence, Dr Liam Fox, to the United Arab Emirates on 6-7 June. Dr Fox held discussions with Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, on international, regional and bilateral issues.

Dr Gargash welcomed Dr Fox and commended the pace of progress in cooperation between the two friendly countries.UK Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, William Hague, has invited UAE Foreign Minister H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed to make an early visit to London.

Yesterday in London, UAE Ambassador to the UK HE Abdul Rahman Ghanem Al-Mutaiwee met high profile delegation headed by Chief Executive of UK Trade '&' Investment (UKTI), the Government organisation responsible for marketing the UK overseas.

The two sides discussed ways to boost the UAE-British relations through the joint economic committee set up last year.
