The UAE is amongst the first five countries in the world and the first in the Middle East and North Africa to have 3 Dimension (3D) TV. The service was announced recently at a press conference held by Etisalat at its headquarters in Abu Dhabi.

In the presence of media and representatives, the company launched its service officially for its customers across UAE, making it the first operator in the region to do so.

A recent report from Informa Telecoms and Media confirmed UAE's position in the first 5 countries in the world to launch the 3D TV service for its customers.

The service was launched in France, Belgium and Portugal in May 2010 and in Switzerland earlier this month, positioning UAE as one amongst the world's most technologically advanced nations. It is also a strong indication of UAE's network readiness attained through Etisalat 's advanced fibre-optic network which is one of the most advanced projects in the UAE and the world, and also one of Etisalat 's biggest investment in infrastructure.

Commenting on this achievement, Ahmad Abdulkarim Julfar, Group COO of Etisalat said, "We are proud to position UAE as one of the first five countries in the world to bring home the 3D technology for its residents and to be the first operator in the region to launch this service to our customers." He added that other countries will have the technology they gradually upgrade to the fibre-optic technology. However, being amongst the first few today is what distinguishes Etisalat.

"Becoming the first to launch the 3D TV service in the region is a natural and eminent advantage of this network", he added.

Last week, Etisalat’s Chairman, Mohammed Omran, addressed the 7th Annual Media and Telecommunications Convergence Conference reiterating the importance of partnerships between content developers and telecom companies, highlighting the challenge faced by telecommunications companies in the transition from being mere connectivity providers to smart operators offering value-added solutions that enhance their customers' lifestyles, such as mobile payment, IPTV, mobile TV with a special focus on local content development.

Omran went on to describe how broadband provides a key pocket for growth “Demand for fixed and mobile data is increasing . This is due to the increasing number of smart phones and the popularity of social networking websites like Twitter, Facebook,  and Youtube. Consumers want more convenience and they want to have access to information and entertainment anywhere anytime we are looking forward to give our customers the opportunity to access and share content on different screens,” added Omran .

To this end we have continuously worked hard on our Fiber Optic network which is considered one of the most important pillars of UAE Telecom infrastructure.  So far we have reached 116% of our target, with almost 900.000 homes connected.

Omran noted that merger and acquisition (M&A) revival is imminent as home markets reach saturation point and witness increased competition. Supporting this is the availability of distressed assets.. Added to that is the more readily available cash and funding in the post crises time in light of an addressable global telecom market which is expected to see growth in the region of 69% by 2015

Etisalat recently launched the region's first three dimension (3D) television service, and was the fourth operator worldwide to start 3D TV. This has come after less than a year of launching HD [high definition] technology. All Etisalat triple play eLife (combined internet, fixed line and TV service package) and E-Vision subscribers can enjoy 3D TV today  .

Etisalatalso announced its network readiness to provide next-generation technologies and applications of the fourth generation and the introduction of some high-speed applications within the services provided through the fiber optic network which is near completion.
