Egypt (Cairo) - A study prepared by an international consultant revealed that al-Dabaa is the best site to build Egypt’s first nuclear plant to be used in generating electricity, said Egyptian Electricity and Energy Minister Hassan Younis.

The nuclear safety authority is completing all licenses and permits needed for the site and is picking the most technology compatible with Egypt's climate, Hassan said while making a field tour of El-Tebeen steam power station on Sunday 13/6/2010.

Contracts are to be signed in the coming days with Russia, France and the US to train and qualify Egyptian cadres needed for carrying out and supervising the project, he said.

The specifications of the plant will be announced before the end of the year, he added.

Electricity prices have not increased in the past two years, Younis said, adding that the cabinet determines those prices. They will not be affected by the private sector's engagement in building power stations, he said.

The increment of power consumption does not correspond to growth rates in Egypt, he said. Economic growth rate reached 6% while power consumption rose 13% in May compared to the same period last year, he elaborated.

The power sector has no problem in fulfilling any increases, however it calls on citizens to rationalize the use of electricity, he said.
