Today, Mr Alistair Burt, British Foreign Office Minister responsible for Middle Eastern affairs met HE Dr Anwar Gargash, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs at the Foreign Office in London.  After warm and constructive discussions the two Ministers agreed to work closely together on a regular basis on concrete proposals for broader and deeper cooperation, building on the existing close bonds between our people and our businesses.

When the UK Prime Minister met His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, The President of the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi on 12 June he said:

"The deep friendship between the UK and the UAE is based on a unique, shared history and common interests. But even more important than these is our common future. We are committed to strengthening our cooperation on defence and security, as long-standing friends with shared vital interests. Also, with so many important business relationships and investments in both our countries, we both want to build and develop our economic ties."

“More than one million Britons visit the UAE every year and around 100,000 live here. Thousands of Emiratis, too, come to the UK as tourists and students or to do business. The UAE remains Britain’s largest export market in the Middle East and our 13th largest in the world. It’s also a key source of foreign direct investment into Britain. Meanwhile, UK oil companies BP and Shell have worked with Abu Dhabi for more than 70 years and Rolls-Royce turbines have powered Abu Dhabi oil production since 1973.”

Since then the Foreign Secretary has met His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al Nahyan,  Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates in London on 17 June for further discussions on how to strengthen and reinvigorate the bilateral relationship, as he mentioned in his speech on 1 July.
