Hobb Story - Instructions for Tunisian Love in London

Tunisia - The sell-out hit of the 2009 Carthage Theatre Festival, Hobb Story: Instructions for Arab Love receives its UK premiere as part of the London International Festival of Theatre (LIFT) 2010.

It will run from Wednesday 7 to Saturday 10 July at the Riverside Studios, Hammersmith.

Produced by rising Tunisian multimedia group Artistes Producteurs Associes, and directed by one of Tunisia’s promising directors, Lotfi Achour, Hobb Story is a visually-spectacular thought-provoking mixture of performance, documentary, sex education and music.

The testimonies of the young people in Hobb Story: Instructions for Arab Love prove that the loves and heartbreaks of growing up are just as joyful and painful no matter where you are in the world.

The presentation of Hobb Story marks the beginning of a four-year interrogation into the Middle and Near East by LIFT, recognising both the geo-political importance of the region and the groundswell of theatre emerging from its independent producers and companies.

Mark Ball, Artist Director, LIFT says ‘This year’s festival includes some ground-breaking new work from Germany, Canada and Tunisia that brings artists and audiences in a radically different ways. I have been profoundly moved by work from emerging theatre makers in the Near East and North Africa – a rich source of ideas and creativity that I think really challenges our perception of the region.’

In addition to the performances, LIFT is also hosting a discussion on Theatre from the Arab World as part of the series of festival talks at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London.  Chaired by Deborah Shaw, Associate Director at the Royal Shakespeare Company, the talk brings together emerging and established theatre professionals from the UK and the region such as Lotfi Achour, Tunisia and Lucien Bourjeily of Lebanon.

The focus of the talks will be on the intricate relationship between the bold, creative, defiant works created by the young generation of theatre artists in the region, and tradition, religion and local culture

The presentation of Hobb Story: Instructions for Arab Love is supported by the British Council Performance Platforms project in association with the Ministry of Culture and Heritage Preservation in Tunisia.
