Tunisia (Tunis) - The 2-day preparatory meeting to set up a cultural strategy to promote Arab women’s status concluded activities on Friday in Tunis.

The meeting addressed the guidelines of the cultural strategy for Arab women advancement and suggested ways of implementing it.

It was organized by the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) in cooperation with Tunisian Ministry of Women, Family, Children and the Elderly Affairs, as part of the Tunisian presidency of the Arab Women Organisation (AWO) in the person of First Lady Leila Ben Ali.

Representatives and experts in the areas of culture and Arab women issues from Syria, Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, Palestine and Bahrain participated in the meeting.

Mrs. Wadouda Badrane, AWO Director-General, highlighted the qualitative leap made at the level the pan-Arab organisation’s actions which reflect the depth of the issues addressed and the will to materialise the different programmes established.

The cultural strategy to promote Arab women’s status is one of the current Arab priorities, Mrs. Badrane underlined, extending her thanks to Tunisia’s First Lady for her successive initiatives designed to emancipate women in the Arab world.

Former Syrian Minister of Culture and Researcher Dr. Najwa Kassab Hassan said the promotion of Arab women status constitutes a comprehensive civilized project, a main basis for the development and an intellectual framework that devote the values of justice, reject all forms of discrimination and build trends and attitudes to contribute in building positive image of women and their role.

Kassab Hassan, who participated in the meeting, stressed the importance of the culture in enhancing awareness and the capacity to absorb the global changes.

She affirmed that the cultural strategy for the advancement of Arab women aimed at empowering women as contributor to the comprehensive and sustainable development process and strengthening their position as key players in all areas of intellectual and artistic creation.

In her opening address, Tunisian Minister of Women, Family, Children and Elderly Affairs, Mrs. Bebia Bouhnek Chihi, emphasised the importance of this preparatory meeting in defining the guidelines of the strategy which will certainly open up wider prospects for women through culture, as a development factor.

She reviewed the Tunisian policy in matters of women’s advancement and their involvement in the State’s building process, pointing out that the President of the Republic considers women as men’s full partners and shield against extremism.

The minister emphasised the importance of establishing a new culture, one resting on equality and fight against discrimination as, she added, there is no room today for a culture that does not recognise the Other as an entity entitled to full rights and duties.
