Morocco, UNIFEM cooperating to implement gender equality

Rabat - Morocco and the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) signed, on Monday in Rabat, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to implement the third phase of the Gender Responsive Budgeting (GRB) programme.

The MoU was signed by Morocco's Economy and Finance Minister, Salaheddine Mezouar, and Regional Director of the UNIFEM Programmes for North Africa, Zineb Benjelloun Touimi.

Mezouar said that this agreement confirms Morocco's commitment to the implementation of the Gender Responsive Budgeting. It also consolidates the results and strengthens the partnership between the two parties through a third phase of the GRB programme.

For her part, Benjelloun Touimi welcomed Morocco's interest in matters relating to equality of opportunity between women and men and its will to fulfil this commitment through budget allocations from the state.

Gender-responsive budgeting is government planning, programming and budgeting that contributes to the advancement of gender equality and the fulfilment of women's rights.

It entails identifying and reflecting needed interventions to address gender gaps in sector and local government policies, plans and budgets.(MAP)
