Tunisia & Syria: Presidents Ben Ali and al-Assad Furthering Joint Cooperation

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Mrs. Asma al-Assad started on Monday an official visit to Tunisia.

Tunisian President Zine el Abidine Ben Ali and President Al-Assad had a talk which turned on the excellent fraternal relations binding Tunisia and Syria and on prospects for boosting bilateral co-operation, as well as on the current regional and international issues.

The Official Spokesman for the Presidency of the Republic specified that the two heads of state had voiced satisfaction at the progress of the fraternity and co-operation relations between the two countries, reasserting keenness to further develop and diversity their fields.

In this connection, the two presidents stressed businessmen's pivotal role in materialising the new co- operation opportunities, recommending to ensure follow-up of the implementation of the High Joint Committee's decisions and recommendations.

The state of affairs on the Arab scene and the latest developments in the Middle East region were also the focus of the attention of the two heads of state, who exchanged opinions and viewpoints on these issues.

President Zine el Abidine Ben Ali reiterated Tunisia's keenness to strengthen inter-Arab co-operation, to clear relations between sisterly countries and develop the situation in the Arab World.

He stressed the need to develop Arab joint action with a view to imparting greater efficiency, in the service of the Arab peoples' interests and causes.

He also pointed to the imperative of intensifying co- ordination and consultation among the Arab states, particularly within the international bodies, in order to better serve the Arab joint causes.

President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali also reasserted Tunisia's support to all initiatives meant to arrive at a just and lasting settlement of the Middle East conflict and to help the Palestinian people recover their legitimate rights, in such a way as to guarantee peace, security and stability for the peoples of the region.

President Zine el Abidine Ben Ali and First Lady Leila Ben Ali hosted a dinner in honour of Syrian President Bashar  Al- Assad and his wife, Mrs. Asma Al-Assad, as well as the delegation accompanying them.

Were invited to the dinner the Prime Minister, the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, the Speaker of the Chamber of Advisers, the Constitutional Democratic Rally politburo members, the Government members and the Mufti of the Republic.

The political parties' secretaries-general and the chairmen of the national organisations, consultative councils and official bodies, as well as the Arab countries' ambassadors accredited in Tunis, were also invited to this diner.

During the Arab Summit which was held in Sirte, Libya last March, President al-Assad held talks with President Ben Ali on the importance of bolstering an Arab active cooperation that meets the aspirations of the Arab people.

Tunisian president received on February 18th, 2010, a message from President al-Assad on the situation in  the Arab region and working to build an Arab unified stance to confront the current challenges. President Ben Ali also participated in Damascus Summit in 2008.

The Syrian-Tunisian Higher Joint Committee held its 11th session last May in Tunisia during which the two sides signed 6 cooperation documents in the fields of banking, judiciary, industry, higher education and developing exports aiming at upgrading the economic relations between the two countries up to the level of the distinguished political relations.

The volume of trade exchange between the two countries reached to USD 37,682 millions, compared to USD 25,290 millions in 2008. During the first three months of the current year, it has reached to USD 15 millions. (TAP, SANA)
