Morocco: $ 9 billion solar energy project showcased in Italy

Milan - Morocco's strategy in terms of promoting renewable energy was showcased, on Monday in Milan (Italy), by the head of the Moroccan Agency for solar energy, Mustapha Bakkoury.

Morocco made the choice of securing energy supply's quality and quantity and protecting its environment, amid challenges of pollution, desertification and increasing energy consumption, Bakkoury said, addressing a panel on energy, held as part of the Mediterranean Economic and Financial Forum (July 12-13).

Bakkoury also highlighted Morocco's large-scale solar energy project, worth $9 billion.

This project aims to generate 2000 MW by 2020 and reduce Morocco's dependence on oil and gas imports.

Recently Morocco unveiled a wind energy project, worth 31.5 billion dirhams ($3.5bln), providing for building new wind energy farms which will help increase the share of the Kingdom’s electricity consumption from renewable sources to 42 percent by 2020.

As part of this project, a wind farm, the largest in Africa, was inaugurated in Tangier with a capacity of 140 megawatts and cost 2.75 billion dirhams.

The Moroccan delegation to the two-day event included notably transports minister Karim Ghellab in addition to several economic stakeholders.(MAP)
