Oman: Salalah Tourism Festival kicks off

Oman (Salalah) - The events of Salalah Tourism Festival kicks off on Thursday at the wilayats competition yard at Municipality Recreational Centre under the auspices of Sayyid Ali Bin Hamoud al Busaidi , Minister of the Diwan of Royal Court. The Festival events will run through till August 31st 2010.

Mohammed Bin Omar al Rowas, General Supervisor of the Festival Administration that this year's festival includes more than 500 assorted events in the different religious, cultural, sports, art and recreational fields. He pointed out that the competition of the wilayat will be held on the new equipped theater which accommodates 3000 spectators. The new theater is one of the new features of the Municipality Recreational Centre. 17 wilayats from different parts of the Sultanate will take part and display their cultural and traditional arts.

He added that the festival will include 14 sports events, about 20 child events on the Child Village Theater which accommodates 700 spectators. The child play area has been provided with 28 games that meet the requirements of the different age groups.

He also pointed out that the Municipality Recreational Centre, which was set up on 200,000 square meters, has been equipped with improved service facilities  this year. 6 great halls have been prepared to host about 25 environment, health, sports, agriculture, labor, scouting, embassies and fine art exhibitions. The Festival will also focus on promoting traffic awareness and limiting the number of road accidents through the exhibition organized by Royal Oman Police, in response to the royal orders of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said.

Mohammed Bin Omar al Rowas, General Supervisor of the Festival Administration said that Salalah Tourism Festival will also witness four poetry nights, a number of religious lectures and art nights, about 40 art events, 12 singing parties four of which will be staged at Al Morouj Theater, more than 28 theater performances, 5 serials of 'Samra' a popular Program, two nights for Toyoor Al Jannah troupe, one night for Karameesh child Channel alongside with a  number of events which are held for the first time in the Sultanate. He added that the fire works will be launched on July 23rd, the blessed Renaissance Day, the opening day, the concluding day of the festival, in addition to, Sunday and Thursday of each week.

He pointed out that the some events will be held outside the Municipality Recreational Centre, which witness great turn out by tourists including Iteen Plain, Hamrir Plain, Al Mughsail beach, Al Hisn Market and the wilayat of Mirbat. The number of events that will be organized in these areas may be more than 50.

He also pointed out that the Festival provided 3000 jobs and opened the door before a large number of craftsmen to display their products. The Festival also seeks to attract major industrial companies to promote their products at the centre, especially more than 12,000 square meter has been allocated for a big exhibition that attract products from different parts of the world.

2500 school students from Dhofar Governorates, traditional troupes and the Omani Woman Associations will take part at the opening ceremony of the festival. The ceremony includes 9 plateaus, each of them reflect the main features of the achievements made in the Sultanate. (ONA)
