Morocco: First African Youth Games Opens in Rabat

Morocco (Rabat) - The First African Youth Games (under 17) has opened, in Rabat, with the participation of over 1000 athletes from 41 African countries.

During this big continental sports event, held under the patronage of HM King Mohammed VI on July 13-18, participants will compete in some 16 Olympic sports including football, basketball, tennis table, cycling, boxing, rowing, swimming, judo, weightlifting, taekwondo, fencing, shooting, athletics, wrestling, tennis and canoeing.

Speaking on this occasion, President of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) Lassana Palenfo commended Morocco for its pragmatic sports strategy which “is meant to be a tool for achieving social cohesion and instilling sports values in youth”.

In addition to Rabat, the competitions will also take place in the cities of Salé, Casablanca, Mohammedia, Bouznika, Temara, Sidi Allal Bahraoui and Khemisset.

The organization of this big event is part of the national new sports strategy which puts hosting regional, continental and international sports competitions on top of its priorities. (MAP)
