Oman: Commodities exports register 45% increase

Oman (Muscat) - The Commodities exports registered a remarkable increase during January & February 2010, 45.2% compared to the same period in 2009.

The recent statistical bulletin released by the Ministry of National Economy said that the gross value of the commodities exports as of the end of February 2010 increased to hit RO.2173.5 million compared to RO. 1496.6 million compared to the same period in 2009.

The period of 2010 witnessed an increase in oil and gas exports that hit RO.1554 million , 60.6% increase compared to the same period in 2009 (RO.967.9 million) due to the increase in the Sultanate's crude oil exports (87.6%) and refined oil exports (25%). At the same time, the LNG exports declined by 10.4%.

The non oil exports registered a remarkable increase during this period of 2010 (20.7%) to hit RO.307.9 million as compared to RO.255.1 million in 2009. This is attributed to the increase of chemical industries products (140.9%), rubber (92.6%) and live animals (2.4%) and metals and their fabrications by 1.4%. The exports of metal products declined by 13.6%, machinery, equipment and electrical appliances (35.7%).

In the same line of the oil and non oil exports , the value of the re export grew by 13.9% due to the remarkable increase in the export of metal products by 41.6% , electric machinery and equipment by 24.6%. The value of the export of transportation equipment also increase by 11.5% during this period.

As for the registered commodities imports, they witnessed remarkable decline during January and February 2010, by 16.8%. The Sultanate's imports of transaction equipment declined by 32.7% compared to 32.4% for the machinery, equipment and electrical appliance. The live animals and their products imports declined by 23.9%, metals and their fabrications by 7.5%.

The Sultanate's commodities imports of metal products grew by 37.2% compared to 23.3% for chemical products, 9.2% for food industry products. It is noticed that the sea and airports have been affected by the decline in the value of imports. The imports through marine ports declined by 23.7% and 17.5% for the air ports. On the contrary, the imports through land outlets grew by 7.8%.

As for the geographical distribution of the Sultanate's foreign trade, it has been noticed that while the value of the Omani non oil exports to U.S.A., Saudi Arabia and China increased,  the value of exports for U.A.E and India decreased.

As for the value of the Sultanate's imports during this period, it witnessed remarkable decline for the imports from the U.S.A, Japan and  China and a slight increase in the Sultanate's imports from the U.A.E and India. (ONA)
