UN-Habitat: Morocco ranks second worldwide in reducing slums

Rabat - Morocco ranks second worldwide in 2000-2010 in terms of slashing slums' population, UN-Habitat regional coordinator Jean-Yves Barcelo said on Monday.

"Morocco ranks second following Indonesia regarding the reduction of shantytowns' population rate for the period 2000-2010, that is 45.8%, which is a good quantitative indicator," Barcelo underlined in an interview with the Moroccan French-speaking daily "Le Matin du Sahara et du Maghreb".

He added that the UN-Habitat's top 20 countries, in which Indonesia came first with 47.5 %, while Morocco is ahead of Argentina (40.7%), Colombia (39.7%) and Egypt (39.2%), includes the countries that endeavour to improve the living conditions of the slums' population in order to meet the Millennium Development Goals.

This ranking reflects an international recognition of Morocco's efforts in this field, the UN official said, underlining that such results were achieved thanks to a "voluntarist policy", well-defined objectives and appropriate funding.(MAP)
