Egypt: $989 million exports to Italy with 20 % increase

Egyptian exports to Italy reach $989 million in the period from January to May in 2010, marking a 20 percent rise in comparison with the corresponding period in 2009, according to a recent report by the foreign trade data unit of the Trade and Industry Ministry.

Egyptian imports from Italy inched up by 6 percent in the same period to stand at $1.494 billion the report said.

Minister of Trade and Industry Rasheed Mohamed Rasheed said there is a great chance for furthering cooperation with Italy in the coming period in the fields of new and renewable energy as well as micro and small-sized enterprises.

He lauded the distinguished political and economic ties with Italy, noting that Italy is a key EU trade partners to Egypt.

He noted that his ministry is implementing a plan meant to up exports to $200 billion by 2013.

On the other hand, Egyptian Petroleum Minister Sameh Fahmi underscored the importance of an agreement signed between Misr Petroleum and Italy’s oil giant Eni in Milan.

"The accord is a leap in the history of the Egyptian petroleum and gas industry" he said.

As for cooperation with Italy, the minister said Rome has been an essential partner for Egypt since 1955.

Egyptian companies operate now in 16 African and Arab countries, including eight members of the organization of petroleum exporting countries (OPEC), he applauded. (SISI)
